A Weekend Full of Late Late Nights

The days full of outside activity and the evenings full of movies and Big Bang Theory. That kind of sums up our weekend.

I picked the last of the bok choi that was hiding near the swiss chard and a lot of kale from the garden. I really need a dehydrator to make kale chips. Most of the tomatoes are staked and have plenty of support.

Sadly I did not work on my scarf. But I did start and finish two books this past week. Night Road.and Sarah's Key, both page turners and quick reads. I'm not sure if I can say if one or another was a favorite. I enjoyed them both. Now on to this book. I have a goal of reading two books a month, pretty achievable as long as I stay on track.

Tonight I am making an ice box tart from my mom's recipe box. I love taking my time with these types of recipes, memories flooding back of my mom, sister, and I in the kitchen learning from her and and just being close to those I love. I hope to share this recipe with you tomorrow.

In The Garden, June

In the garden today. Doing the mundane, weeding, weeding, weeding. Not there isn't anything going on out there. Everyone looks so happy, growing and soaking up the sun.

The last of the peonies are getting ready to bloom. Have I told you how much I love these flowers with their beautiful color and intoxicating fragrance.

I still don't have any beans in the ground. I will have to remedy that this week.

I really do love this time of year.

This and That

 It's a gorgeous weekend, nice enough to sit outside and drink my tea and pour over some magazines. I'm always plotting and planning. I'm thinking about the garden and the last of the seedlings that need planting. I have tomatoes, peppers and some summer herbs that still need to find homes in my garden. I've planted some peppers out in the front. I think that they will look lovely with the other plants. I love the idea of mixing flowers with vegetables. I guess that edible front yards are all the rage in many parts of the country. Fads and trends take a long time to get to the center of Pennsylvania. So I'm probably very late with this idea.

This picture caught my attention in one of my magazines. I have a couple of ugly chairs that were free and have been sitting sadly in a corner of the basement. They don't have the lovely lines of the chair above, but they will most likely look very pretty with a new, more updated coat of paint and a new cushion.

What are you plotting and planning? For me, it is mostly about the garden and things to do outside.

My Second Favorite Season.

Springtime is one of the most beautiful times of the year. I love watching the yard transform from sleeping brown to an explosion of green. The spring garden looks so young and optimistic with it's pale hues. It carries with it the hope and promise of warmer days. Each walk in the yard is a surprise as each new tender shoot emerges and shows itself, a celebration of renewal. Spring's turn is almost over, as we hope for frost free mornings where heat loving plants can stretch their roots and and get comfortable.

I love getting out in the yard and digging in the dirt and cleaning out the flower beds. It's therapeutic for me, this time in the garden. I can spend an afternoon out weeding, pruning, mulching, getting it all done. It's a day well spent tending the veggies, knowing that they will soon give some love back in the form of delicious food.   How local and fresh can you get?

So for now I bask in the cool morning and celebrate a spring moment.

Thyme Turning

While waiting for warmer days my herbs sit patiently on a windowsill waiting. As we both wait to go outside, I have them a turn every morning and marvel at their ability to turn themselves toward the sun.  I can hardly wait for these young seedlings to set up roots outside and provide us with an abundance of herbs.

Dogwood in Bloom

Hello friends, just wanted to stop in and share a picture of a blossom from our dogwood tree. Looking out at the backyard and seeing the dogwood tree in full bloom brings a smile to my face. It is a cheerful bright spot in the yard at this moment in time. The forsythia is finished blooming with it's fiery show and the lilac has not yet taken over center stage. So it is the dogwood tree that garners the gardens full attention. Have a lovey day.
